Robert C. Peirce diary, 1862-1863.

The collection consists of a diary of Robert C. Peirce, Paymaster of the U.S.S. Dawn, from September 24, 1862 - February 7, 1863. The diary contains information about the activities of the U.S.S. Dawn in and around the Ogeechee River, south of Savannah, Georgia including the islands of Ossabaw and Wassaw, as part of the Union blockade. Peirce discusses trips up the Ogeechee to attack "the Battery," weather, and how crew members hunted to provide food.
